"cleanliness is next to Godliness, for God is our first Ancestor - our high-gene/hygeine" - Mami Wata Esi Akua of the House Of Patou
One very important thing to know about water spirits is that we don't. Like. Mess! Here at the House of Patou we take cleaning very seriously as we understand that when we are cleaning an establishment we are inviting God and divinities into our space. The functioning of the house is of the upmost important to Mami wata of The House Of Patou and it stars with the cleanliness of the house as a clean house ensures that everything else has a clean space to function, to move, and to focus;
"Being a daughter of Mami wata means having immaculate hygiene - as mami wata spirits do not like mess, so cleaning my space, or a space, is a ritual that I undergo every day. A tidy space makes for a tidy mind, and a tidy mind makes for a happy spirit, and I understand that as I clean my physical space, I am also cleaning up the spiritual space in which my spirit occupies to. But in the bigger picture of creation I know that cleaning up my own personal space is to also clean up the spiritual as a WHOLE; within western/Europeanised psychology it is practised to heal a person as an individual being, which takes away the connection in which one has with global/communal consciousness. Within an 'afro-centric' way of living we recognise the individual to be part of, and one with not just nature but with global and communal consciousness - and so this is the understanding that we are not just healing ourselves when we undergo personality integration but we are also healing the masses on a global scale too - and this is the same for cleaning up our spaces; we are not just cleaning up our individual space but we are contributing to the cleanliness of the space in which our community lives within too. This is why at The House Of Patou we are a clean up organisation/cooperation, crafting tools and helping other to not only clean up their space but, as a whole, to also clean up their act.."

Water is the very standard of The Hygiene state, for in order to wash away dirt water must be involved. This is why water spirts make for excellent cleaners and house keepers - believe me when I say - having your house cleaned by a marine spirit is a different type of cleanliness;

The water maiden - the maid in mermaid: To understand the maiden of the waters is also an understanding of the word “mermaid” and how it can be broken down into three words that give a deeper meaning to these beautifully captivating water creatures.
First we have the word “mer” which comes from the English root word “mere” meaning seas/lake which, of course, is very self explanatory. What my own personal water spirit has pointed out to me is both the word “maid” and “aid” in “mermaid”,as these two things are very telling in regards to their nature, particularly when it comes to cleaning or keeping clean. Maid comes from the word maiden which means a girl or young woman, but we also have the word maid in reference to “A house maid” or in this case “A water maid” - which shows that the mermaids service is to the waters (she serves the water). To future understand the nature of mermaids is to also understand the nature of the water; water is a shape shifter as it is the only substance that can exists in all three states – liquid, solid, gas/vapour. This means that some species of mermaids can shape shift too, a metamorphosis of fins to feet to aid them in walking on the lands (merfolk) – now, in a sense, becoming a house maid. However, don’t let the status of a “maid” fool you into thinking that this equals a ‘lowly job’ for her service is still to the waters, weather she is on the lands or within the seas. On the land she brings her service of the water to the house (environment), ensuring the act of her “mer-maid” in the looking after, overseeing, and cleaning/order of her space. For you can take the mermaid out of the water but you cannot take the water out of the mermaid – she is one who always has the waters nature to clean and keep clean, to wash, to purify. Even the mermaids who have be ‘crowned’ by Mami Wata’s rain (reign) are still required to perform services – for the the Akan saying goes “Nea ope se obedi hene daakye no, firi ase sue som ansa” – “He who wants to be king in the future must first learn to serve”. Now of course there are many ways to serve – a maid a mermaid is but she can still serve looks! But for the good spirit of this book I’m referring to the mermaids service in her form and act of cleaning. The role of a maid is to keep clean and tidy residences and commercial establishments. A deeper look into this is the knowing and understanding of establishments, for we have religious establishments (e.g Mami Wata religion) that not only include the physical building of it (shrine houses, altar spaces ect) but also the religion (the system) itself is the establishment - and so the mer-maid is one who keeps clean and tidy the system (religion) of Mami Wata – especially in her ‘crowing’ within the establishment (religious system). Understand, though, that Mami Wata religion is that of all religions, for water is that which is all around (within the soils, on the lands as lakes, seas, and oceans, in the air, and in the skies as the clouds, in plant life within the trunks of trees and the petals of flowers ect) the meaning of this is that Mami wata will give her services (her mer-maids) to any given religion in order to keep the establishment clean. This means that there are mermaid spirits within the kemetic system, within Ifa, within Akom ect…"
