"Oh the Wise White Serpent of the seas, of the sky, clouds, and the water streams.
serpent of time
serpent of Life
Serpent of Death, victory, and of strife..." Mami Wata stories written by Mia Esi-Akua
Did you know Mami Wata is also known as "Mother of serpents" and just like African religions/traditions/spirituality/way of life, the serpent is also something that has been demonised by colonialism, particularly by the church.
Serpents are, in fact, a powerful symbolism, and spirit, of wisdom, transformation/rejuvenation, duality, and the complexities of creation. Under some African and Caribbean cultures serpents are also used for divination - the seeing of the past, present, and the future.
Under Mami Wata, the serpent is her child/creation of wisdom (knowledge in motion/e-motion), the movement of time, the challenges and victory of Life, and for some of us the serpent is the very image of our soul.
I have the symbol of the Wise White Serpent for Mama wata Stories because her stories are also known as "wisdom stories" and so by her title of "Mother of serpents" they are "serpent/wisdom" stories, and most importantly as mama wata is the mother of serpents she gives the features of her tails/tales to her children! - tails/tales of the serpent, the mermaid, and the dragon just to name a few.
part of reclaiming OurStory and our identity is to also reclaim the wisdom in which was reprogrammed out of us- or lets say that overrides our original DNA programming - The stories/features of our Ancestors and The Creator; and so to use the first law of The Serpent, we must transform false beliefs to original truths - and that starts with the knowledge and wisdom of you! it starts with knowing our story.
To truly know more of the Wisdom of The Wise White Serpent, ensure to keep an eye open for "Mami Wata Stories" where I will be releasing books/stories that have been channeled directly from the Waters, poured from the soul, and written by the heart.
from Yours truly,
Mia Esi-Akua, an eternal child of The Waters

About us - Mami Wata creations
A Mami Wata shrine house established in the UK
What is a shrine house?
A shrine is a space in which has been created/errected to give reverence and to communicate to (in our case) Mami Wata, however under mama wata of the house of Patou are a council of deities and spirits that all work alongside each other to sustain and maintain not just the shrine house but creation in its totality. Mami Wata of the House of Patou is a water deity that has been here from the beginning of my bloodline - for she is the creatress of my linage - she's a deity in which has been and will always be. passed down from generation to generation, and deals with the masterings/matterings of the home, family, marriage, and hygiene just to name a few things. Water has the power to take the form of any and all vessels, and so Mami Wata is not only a singular goddess but she also refers to a pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. Mami Wata of the House of Patou has a given name that has been passed on through linages.
There are Deities that deal with the matterings of the universe on a macrosclaes - ones who whisper collective prophecies to their priests and priestesses regarding the happenings of the spirit and physical realm - as they are two realms that are reflections of each other. However, Mami Wata of the house of Patou deals with the spirit and physical realms on a micro-sclaes (do not confuse the dealings of the macrosclaes as a "minor deity however), for she gives the knowledge and wisdom that it is indeed the little things that really do count. Mami Wata from the House of Patou deals with the measurements of a single blade of grass, for example, as everything within creation has a measurement and weight and so to keep balance even the grass must be regulated - and she is this regulation. She ensures that there is no more or no less grain of sand that needs to be in place for the order of balance, she ensures that each space is cleaned of even the smallest specks of dust as to not cause imbalance within the universal scales, and even sees the very bacteria in which causes illnesses or brings sound health to living beings so that she can maintain and sustain the order of peace and harmony - for even the smallest of grains can indeed tip the scales for better or for worse. This is to say, Mami Wata of the House of Patou can fit through the smallest of cracks (as water will always find the path of least resistance) in order to search and retrieve what needs to be found to bring to us balance, peace, harmony, correctness, righteousness, and truth. And so, our shine house is established upon the macroscale of the matterings of life - here to help with the little things!
is mami wata a religion?
A simple answer to this question is no, mami wata shrine house of Patou is not a religious establishment per se, however to understand it better I use the word religion with its root worded meaning in mind and in heart "realignment", as with all religions they should aid us all in aligning with The Most High - and so with this understanding mami wata house of Patou is an establishment of realignment as it is here to help connect us to our God given soul purpose and destiny as an individual and as a collective.
Having a mami wata is not a religion, it is in fact a way of life - she comes with her laws (marine law) order, tools and ways of communication, taboos, dances, songs, water magic, scriptures, and water powers.
Do I have to have a mani wata, or follow her laws and order, to receive services from the house of Patou?
No! you do not have to have a mami wata or a marine spirit to receive services such as cowrie shell divination from the House of Patou. Everyone has their Ancestors, their personal deity, and their soul purpose and this is what we focuse in on at the house of Patou - your individuality within the community. Life can sometimes be a complex system to navigate, and sometimes obsticals can get in our way, or perhaps you've been having intense dreams that need interpreting, or you're a practisinor yourself looking for tools, charms, and amulets to assist you on your journey and in your workings - Mami wata shrie house of Patou is here to aid in all these things from locating where it is you may be blocked and finding the way to unblock it, helping you navigate your way through life to acheive your best life, and fulfilling your purpose! or providing you with tools of protection, luck, and things of that nature for your own workings.
I think I might have a mami wata, can you help me with this understanding?
Absolutely! what stands this shrine house apart from other is the understadning that everyone has their own personal deities, ancestors, laws, and orders that have been inherited down through soul, spirit, and bloodline - that is to say, while the personality of mami wata is more or less the same throughout many west African and caribbean culturers that does not mean, for example, my mami wata and your mami wata are the same! If, for example, you have Ifa your mami wata may be Osun, or if you are of Hatian vodo you may have la siren - this is to say, at the shrine house of Patou we look into your PERSONAL mami wata and ensure that we aid you in connecting with her/him and not connecting to the mami wata of the house of Patou (my personal mami wata who has a name of her own) - we respect each individual culture, alignment, and inheritence. As Mami wata spirits ecompass similar personality, we can aid you in your understanding of the ways in which mami wata expresses herself in general, and the understanding of marine law, so that you are more the wiser, and open, to communicating with you mami/papa water.
Is it possible that my mami wata is the same as the mami wata from the House of Patou?
This is a possibility! and if that is the case then... hello sister/brother! However, if this is to be the case mami wata of the house of Patou will ensure to let you know in obvious and maraculous ways that we simply could not deny the fact. More information on this is a need to know bases.
Being a child of the water v.s. being a mami wata pristess
While all mami wata pristesses are children of the water, not all children of the water are mami wata pristesses. Look at it like this - your mother that gave birth to you lives her life by a disapline - a set of rules and regulations that she goes by, and just because you are your mothers child this does not mean you have to live in the same disapline, or way of life, as she does - you may have your mothers temperment, features, attitude etc but you do not have to abide by her rules and order: This is what being a child of the water is like - you have mami/papi wata's personality and features but you don't have to live a life following day to day orders and regulations; with that being said being a water spirit does mean there are certain things that you should do to benifit the nature of your spirit.
Being a mami wata pristess, however, not only means having a water spirit/personality, it also means that you inherit mami watas laws, orders, and regulation with the soul duty and responsibility of carrying it out - this inculdes, but is not limited to, carrying out rituals, using various tools within natrure to communicate and recieve insight from the waters, being a gatekeeper of waters wisdom and opening the gate when need be.
